The Forests of Venice

The Forests of Venice

The Forests of Venice exhibition was initiated, organised and produced by Kjellander Sjöberg Architects and Arvet for the 2016 Architecture Biennale of Venice. The impressive wooden pavillion was designed by Kjellander Sjöberg and became a landmark and venue right next to the Girardini della Biennale in Venice. The exhibition consists of two components, the external pavilion made from Cross Laminated Timber and the research proposals of seven invited Swedish architecture offices. The exhibition was curated by Jan Åman, promoted by the Swedish Institute with the support of Swedish Wood, Martinsons as a manufacturer and Sveaskog.

The ‘Forest of Venice’ exhibition was part of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition who’s theme was Reporting from the Front curated by the Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena. The exhibition highlighted the interplay between nature and our man-made habitats in relation to climate change and limited resources.

The pavillon’s purpose was to demonstrate the versatility of wood as a building material as well as to promote its sustainable aspect while using innovation and technology in a time when climate change threatens the whole world but already coastal cities like Venice. Seminars and talks were held around the pavillon where Elisabeth Backteman – state secretary- and Alice Bah Kuhnke – minister of Culture- shared insights as well as world renown timber architects as WaughThistleton, dRMM and Shop Architects.

The pavilion was made up of criss-crossing CLT-boards and formed a latticed structure with filtered light and acoustic presence which made it a kind of forested place of respite, offering a secluded retreat for the visitors and attracted attention from everybody passing the garden due to its materiality, color and shape.
